Above Ground Pool Heaters
Above ground pools are much more popular for private owners than the traditional in ground pools. This is because they are much cheaper to purchase, take up less room and are more flexible in terms of their location. If you move house or don’t require the pool any longer it can be relocated.
The general consensus is that a swimming pools water temperature should be a minimum of 78 degrees but younger children requires warmer water, at least 82 degrees. Depending on where you live and the local climate these temperatures might not always be achievable using the heat from the sun alone. This is why above ground pool heaters are becoming more common. You can have control of the water temperature and aren’t just relying on the sun. Installing an above ground pool heater also means the pool can be used all year round.
There are three main types of above ground pool heaters. The gas pool heater, electric heat pump and solar powered pool heater. Gas pool heaters are powered using bottled propane gas or natural piped gas. They are currently the most populate type of pool heater due to their low capital cost and the speed in which they can heat the water.
Electric pool heaters are like air conditioning units in reverse. They extract the heat from the air and transfer it to the pool water via a heat exchanger. They are more compact than gas systems but they are more expensive to run. Solar powered systems are free to run once installed but the capital cost is quite high.
The cost of a 100,000 BTU gas power above ground pool heaters is approximately $700. This size of pool heater can be used with pool sizes 15’ round to 27’ round.
An equivalent electric pool heat will cost about $1300 and a solar powered system will be $3000
